As Far As My Eyes Can See
Every time I've heard this
song since I got hooked on the Sentinel, it just seems to scream Jim and Blair
getting split up because of government intrigue and all kinds of other
things. I finally heard the song when I
was close enough to my computer to start writing some thoughts down. Here's what came of it. The lyrics are at the bottom of the
story. Enjoy.

Jim knew that his time was getting short. He ducked into an alley and waited to see what would happen next. He snorted over how sloppy the people following him had gotten. You just can't buy good help any more, can you? After a few minutes alone in the alley, Jim knew that he'd finally lost his tail. At least for now. I guess it's time. He sadly patted the envelope hidden in his coat, slipped out the other end of the alley, and made his way to the nearest post office drop box. I'll miss you guys, but I guess it's time to go.
Dear
Simon,
I
hope you know just how much
you mean to me I'll miss you and the rest of the gang. When you feel it's safe, tell the gang I said
'Hi.' You have always been there when Sandburg
Blair or I needed you. Thank you for
backing me up even when you weren’t sure what I we were doing. Some day, when you know the time is right,
think back to the fight argument conversation we had in the loft
that last time… and you'll remember that there is one last thing I need you to
do.
Please…
for him… for me… maybe for us all.
Your Friend, Elli Jim
The nested envelopes were sent on their way. The outermost was addressed to a distant acquaintance who owed him a favor. It should take about a month to peel off the five outer layers until the innermost envelope was exposed and mailed to Simon. That should be enough time. It will have to be. I'm not sure how much more time I have. Jim faded back into the shadows, turned a few more corners, and then got back in front of his 'shadows.' They didn't even notice I was gone. "Thanks, Chief," he murmured. I guess all that blasted training really was useful.
He went back over the plan one more time. There was no room for errors. If he made a mistake, not only would they kill him, but many, many other innocents would suffer. That would not be allowed to happen on his watch.
Jim wanted to stay and fight. It went against all of his training and instincts as a cop and a Sentinel to run. But the black ops side of him was in control of this mission. The parameters were set and the only thing Jim wanted more than to stay and fight his way out, was to get vengeance for his guide. The people who were responsible would pay. On that, all of the facets of Jim agreed. If he survived, what came next was still up for debate.

A Month Later,
The Chopec welcomed the weary traveler with open arms. The enthusiastic reception from his friends sent a sliver of warmth into his tired body. The laughter he heard coming from behind him sent his heart into overdrive. He spun and looked with amazed delight into the set of twinkling blue eyes.

Old and Wise - Alan Parsons Project
As far as my eyes can see
There are shadows approaching me
And to those I left behind
I wanted you to know
You've always shared my deepest thoughts
You follow where I go
And oh... when I'm old and wise
Bitter words mean little to me
Autumn winds will blow right through me
And someday in the mist of time
When they asked me if I knew you
I'd smile and say you were a friend of mine
And the sadness would be lifted from my eyes
Oh when I'm old and wise
As far as my eyes can see
There are shadows surrounding me
And to those I leave behind
I want you all to know
You've always shared my darkest hours
I'll miss you when I go
And oh... when I'm old and wise
Heavy words that tossed and blew me
Like autumn winds that will blow right through me
And someday in the mist of time
When they ask you if you knew me
Remember that you were a friend of mine
As the final curtain falls before my eyes
Oh when I'm old and wise
As far as my eyes can see
